Shark Dreaming

       In a thought, I caught a dream.
It was there but a second
yet worth a day or more.
       Water filled my lungs
and I surfaced in a bay.
       A single breath of air
       seemed to last forever.
I dived beneath the waves and
       met an oncoming friend.
       The water around me moved.
       My hair moved with it.
       A shark swam over me,
       A second joined it.
       The sea current moved
       the kelp below us.
       Sunlight filtered through
       the water above.
The sharks swam to the surface
and I rose to join them.
         Rows of razor white teeth
I felt at peace with them.
           Human and shark,
             dangerous predators.
               Yet we got along.
               We understood.
