For Cassandra

for what's a fortress worth
and our defences sure -
faith like a mighty army,
onward generations counting,
our defence is sure.

a safe stronghold is our God,
and our defence is sure,
where gold and bullion's safe
our onward generation's counted
all the quantum costs of grace

oh safe as churches
do we stand, and lift young arms to pray,
a single gun man kills a virgin daughter
many fall and do not die.

friends fall,
one to the left of me
one to the right,
death shall not come nigh me
in this deadly strife.
age shall have no sting now
where the gentle noseless icon,
powerless to stay,
weeps tears of stone unbroken,
powerless to pray.

daughters who have dwelt by our side,
pushED their hips at us plead
just to go out for a while,
up to the church at need

our sons who have grown so tall,
safe as churches,
go off up the hill
to pray

like a mighty fortress,
our defence is

sure
yet fall
yet fall,
yet fall again,

our mighty sons
for god.
