August

The first erect slithers
emerge
pierce
the thaw
seasoned earth.

In the early morning glow,
little birds chatter
romantically ambitious
to build family nests
in  sprouting branches
flushed red with sap
tipped  in stiff buds
swelling daily
toward the coming
blush of spring.
