December 17th
In the Southern Hemisphere:

Now the north wind comes
With enervating heat and humidity
Harbinger of an approaching low.

Broadleaf weeds assault the lawn
Bouganvilia blazes red along the wall
Blue, pink, magenta, and yellow flowers
Border greens dotted with clover,
Worked by the bees and there a swish
In the grass as a lizard strikes
Amidst insects constantly clicking
While flies, and flies, and flies,
Induce an endless twitching.
After days of procrastination
I get out the mower, sweating
Uncomfortable,prickling.
And grimly get it over with!

Showered, clean and changed
I walk a few kilometers to Mt Albert
And look over the city bordered by beaches
Shimmering and humming on its fifty volcanoes
And wonder if Christina would rather be here.
